Advance Family Planning mourns the loss of Willard (Ward) Cates Jr., a true champion of public health, since his passing on March 17. Ward was a pioneer researcher in the fields of women's reproductive health and HIV/AIDS.
“Aside from being a giant in our field, Ward was one of the nicest, most gracious people I have ever known,” said AFP Director Duff Gillespie.
A renowned leader and mentor, Ward has inspired two generations of leading scientists, public health officials, and clinical practitioners and provided much guidance for those working in family planning. His profound generosity was as greatly valued in the community as his deep commitment to public health.
As a former board member of the Guttmacher Institute, Ward requested that contributions in his memory be made to the sexual and reproductive health global research organization.

Advance Family Planning déplore avec grande tristesse la perte de Willard (Ward) Cates Jr., reel champion de la santé publique, décédé le 17 mars. Ward était chercheur de pointe dans les domaines de la santé reproductive de la femme et le VIH/SIDA.
"En plus d'être un géant dans notre domaine, Ward était l'une des personnes les plus aimables et bienveillantes que je n'ai jamais connues", a confié le Directeur d'AFP, Duff Gillespie.
Leader et mentor renommé, Ward a inspiré deux générations de scientifiques, agents de santé publique et praticiens cliniques, en conseillant ceux qui travaillent dans la planification familiale. Sa grande générosité était autant appréciée dans la communauté que son profond engagement pour la santé publique.
En tant qu'ancien membre du Conseil d'Administration du Guttmacher Institute, Ward a demandé à ce que les contributions faites en sa mémoire soient au profit cette organisation de recherche sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive mondiale.
