Full-time position with Population Family and Reproductive Health; 37.5 hours per week; Monday – Friday

AFP is a six-year (2013-18), $32.5 million project spanning 10+ focus countries that aims to increase the financial investment and political commitment needed to ensure access to quality family planning through evidence-based advocacy. The Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is the coordinating partner for AFP. The Communications Specialist will:

  • Assist the Communication Manager and Communication Officer in executing the communication strategy and work plan for the Advance Family Planning (AFP) initiative.
  • Be responsible for the administration, content development and management of AFP’s internal and external websites, media and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
  • Help produce user-friendly, accurate, timely and well-written information and materials and disseminate them to appropriate audiences in both print and electronic formats.
  • Support development of internal and external newsletters and coordinate internal and external events.
  • Oversee AFP’s external and internal websites, including a resource and media database.
  • Liaise with partners and project staff to develop a variety of web and print products and presentation materials, such as fact sheets, briefs, web stories, and case studies.
  • Organize, track, and disseminate AFP’s printed and electronic publications.
  • Contribute ideas for blogs, infographics, and other dissemination methods.
  • Update and execute AFP’s social media strategy.
  • Adhere to institutional, donor, and partner branding requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Bachelor's degree in science and/or communications, journalism, English or related field. Two years related experience, including experience with writing and editing. Knowledge of public health, especially international family planning and reproductive health. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

**JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.**

Preferred Qualifications

French-language ability. Master’s degree, e.g., Journalism, MPH, and MHS. Previous international reproductive health experience and travel in developing countries. Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills. Experience making challenging subjects accessible for lay audiences. Organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically and undertake independent problem solving. Expertise in website content management systems, PowerPoint and Excel for presentations and Analyses. Proficiency in WordPress, Drupal, HTML, Sharepoint or similar content management systems. Knowledge and prior use of Photoshop and Adobe Creative Suite. Knowledge of social media monitoring and analytics tools.
