Maternal and Child Deaths - Family Planning a Priority for Kisarawe District

The Tanzania Central Government has set a target under the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (MKUKUTA II) to reduce maternal deaths from 454 (2010) to at least 193 for every 100,000 live births and child deaths from 112 to 45 for every 1,000 live births by 2015. Among other strategic indicators of progress against this target, MKUKUTA commits the government to attain 60% use of contraceptives by 2015. This goal shows that the government acknowledges family planning services as a preventive measure in reducing unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions and maternal and child deaths.
