Civil Surgeon, Jehanabad District, Bihar commits to strengthening family planning program

Following AFP partners Population Foundation of India (PFI)and Gramin Evam Nagar Vikas Parishad (GENVP) continuous advocacy efforts, the Civil Surgeon (CS) of Jehanabad District asked to organize an AFP SMART facilitation to strengthen the district’s family planning program. A one-day AFP SMART facilitation was organized by the District Health Society (DHS), Jehanabad, in collaboration with PFI and GENVP on 13 May 2015. The workshop focused on understanding the district’s current family planning issues, expenditure trends and developing a work plan for 2015-16 that will support in increasing family planning expenditure and lead to improved quality of care, increased uptake of family planning services and enhancing provider skills. Block health officials from the district’s 7 blocks participated to create block level objectives and specific plans. In the workshop, the CS and block health representatives committed to ensure full fund utilization for FP for the financial year 2015-16. Seven work plans (block wise) were developed focusing on ensuring 100% expenditure and uptake of FP services. Following commitments were made by the DHS which will be tracked by AFP Partners PFI and GENVP.

i. Ensure 100% fund utilization for Family planning which is currently at approx 30% for the entire district

ii. Every Thursday will be observed as Fixed Day Service for Sterilization in all the blocks. Health facilities will follow a strict follow up of the QOC guideline laid by the MoHFW. DHS will ensure provision of surgeon and anesthetics in all the blocks on Thursday

iii. Training will be conducted for 43 ASHA facilitators, 871 ASHA and 30 MAMTAs  for improving counseling skills on family planning / contraceptive update

iv. PPIUCD training will be conducted for 09 doctors and 32 ANMs by October 2015 to ensure improved uptake of quality spacing method
