Pathfinder India

Pathfinder International’s mission is to champion sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) worldwide, mobilizing communities most in need to break through barriers and forge their own path to a healthier future. Currently implementing nearly 120 innovative programs in over 25 countries, Pathfinder’s core areas are in contraception, maternal and newborn health, and HIV and AIDS. Pathfinder’s India Program is more than 15 years old, with its operations managed through a country office in New Delhi and field offices in the states. Apart from several donor-supported projects on family planning (FP), maternal health, HIV/AIDS prevention and adolescent health and behavior across several states, Pathfinder in India has been at the forefront on advocacy issues pertaining to SRHR and pathfinding new approaches in the public and private sectors to tackle public health challenges. The most recent achievement has been to introduce injectable contraceptives in the government’s health system for the first time in India through an agreement with the Government of Haryana.

Taking advantage of provisions under the recently amended Indian Companies Act, 2013 where the law mandates Indian corporates to allocate 2% of their profits to their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, Pathfinder International has partnered with Advance Family Planning to advocate inclusion of FP into CSR policies and increase financial allocations year by year. While CSR spends in India has crossed USD 3 billion last year, the allocation to family planning is negligible.  Pathfinder has begun advocacy with corporates in India to educate them on FP, offer customized CSR solutions for FP and connect the corporates with local NGOs experienced in FP to implement their programs. Through this advocacy initiative that involves strategic engagement with Indian companies by experienced personnel using AFP smart tools,  Pathfinder hopes to unlock a new source of local funding for much-needed family planning programs in India.
