New Adolescent Health Advocacy Toolkit Cites AFP SMART

In May 2017, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and Women Deliver launched the Advocating for Change for Adolescents! toolkit. Developed by young people, for young people, the toolkit is a practical guide for in-country youth networks to design, implement, and monitor an effective national advocacy action roadmap on adolescent health and wellbeing.

The tool’s Chapter 4 (“Developing an effective advocacy action roadmap”) draws from much of the Advance Family Planning (AFP) initiative’s own advocacy tool, AFP SMART: A Guide to Quick Wins, among others.

Applied by the initiative’s partners since 2009, the AFP Advocacy Portfolio was launched publicly at the 2013 International Conference on Family Planning in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Updated in 2015, the AFP SMART approach has transformed the way family planning champions maximize their time and funds to effectively persuade those in power to take action. Using the toolkit, AFP’s advocacy partners have achieved more than 400 advocacy wins at the global, regional, national, and local levels in 19 countries since 2009.
